Overview
Bentley West Primary School follows the National Curriculum.
We follow the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme.
Our Intent
At Bentley West Primary School, we strive to make our children passionate about learning through making the learning engaging, meaningful and relevant. Our bespoke, broad and balanced curriculum, which is underpinned by the National Curriculum (2014), is designed to develop a community of positive and responsible citizens with the social, emotional and academic skills needed for lifelong success. We ensure our curriculum offer is enriched and personalised to our children and their families. Through quality first teaching, memorable experiences and extensive opportunities for learning within and outside the classroom, our children are provided with the knowledge, skills and cultural capital that they will need to succeed in life.
Implementation
At Bentley West Primary School, our bespoke curriculum, which is customised and personalised around the individual backgrounds and needs of the children, will be implemented through:
• Carefully sequenced, coherent and logically ordered long-term, medium-term and short-term planning, which shows progression and depth.
• Quality first teaching, which is adapted to the individual needs of the children within each class, addresses misconceptions and enables challenge for all.
• Prioritising reading through a sequential approach to the reading curriculum which develops fluency, and through a whole school approach which promotes reading for pleasure.
• Prior learning reviews, which take place at the beginning of every lesson.
• Enrichment opportunities such as carefully planned visits, competitions, key
speakers and focused days, which will provide first hand experiences for our
children.
• Engagement with concrete examples to enable abstract ideas to be understood.
• Regular opportunities for parents and carers to engage with the children’s learning through workshops and newsletters.
• Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development across the curriculum.
• Oracy development.
Impact
At Bentley West Primary School, the impact of our curriculum will be measured
through children’s:
• Confidence in the way they articulate their needs and their understanding of the knowledge and skills that they have already learnt and are currently developing.
• Engagement in their own learning and development.
• Positive self-esteem and resilience.
• Understanding of how to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lifestyles.
• Outcomes in line with or better than the national average, at all stages and areas of the curriculum.
• Ability to work independently and the ability to work and engage respectfully as part of a team or group, both inside and outside of the classroom.
• Readiness for the next stage of learning at each transition point.
• Aspirations and high expectations of themselves and other around them.
• Sense of equality and understanding of their rights.
We annually review our curriculum, ensuring that it meets the needs of each new cohort.
